India Legal Counsel for Foreign Companies & Firms | Lynx Legal
International Clients

Your Indian-law counsel — for companies, law firms and families operating across borders.

One accountable Indian advocate for your India work: entry and structuring, ongoing compliance, disputes, and co-counsel for your existing firm. USD invoicing, and work that lands by your morning.

Lynx Legal Partners LLP is a Mumbai-based Indian law firm that acts as Indian-law counsel for foreign companies, overseas law firms, and NRIs. Foreign lawyers and foreign law firms cannot advise on Indian law — under Indian regulation that work is reserved for advocates enrolled in India. We are that layer: we take the Indian-law side of your matter and work alongside your existing counsel, not around them. We invoice in USD or INR, respond within one working day, and turn work around overnight so it reaches you at the start of your day. Fees are transparent and quoted upfront.

Why you need Indian counsel

Foreign firms can't advise on Indian law. We're your Indian-law layer.

If your company, your client or your family has anything legal happening in India, someone with an Indian licence has to carry it. Under the Bar Council of India's 2025 rules, a foreign lawyer or foreign firm may handle only foreign law, international law and international arbitration on a reciprocity basis — advising on Indian law and appearing in Indian courts remains reserved for advocates enrolled in India. Your own firm knows this; it's why cross-border matters need Indian counsel on the ground.

We're built to be that counsel for people who aren't in the room in India: clear scope, predictable fees agreed before we start, and a single accountable partner who answers on your timeline — not an associate pyramid you never meet.

Who we work with

Three ways foreign clients use us

Foreign companies & GCCs

Entering or operating in India

GCCs and captives, wholly-owned subsidiaries, JVs, and companies selling into India — from choosing the right entity through the employment, POSH, data-protection and tax exposure that builds up after the setup consultant hands over.

Why Lynx

Engineer-lawyers, anchored in Mumbai

Our partners trained as engineers before they qualified as advocates — so when the work touches software, data, IP or a technical build, we read the architecture, not just the agreement. We're anchored in Mumbai with representation across Delhi-NCR, Prayagraj and Bengaluru, and we run allied ventures in ADR (FEAM), legal research (JIRMI) and legal-tech (NyayTech) — the corroboration a foreign buyer looks for when choosing counsel they can't meet in person.

Questions foreign clients ask

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign company own 100% of an Indian subsidiary?+

In most sectors, yes — 100% foreign ownership is allowed under the "automatic route," meaning no prior government approval is needed, subject to sectoral conditions. Some sectors have caps or require government approval, and any investment from an entity of a country sharing a land border with India requires prior government approval (Press Note 3, 2020). We confirm the route for your specific sector before you commit capital.

Why can't our own (US/UK/EU) law firm just advise on Indian law?+

Because Indian regulation doesn't permit it. Under the Bar Council of India's 2025 rules, foreign lawyers and foreign firms may practise only foreign law, international law and international arbitration, on reciprocity — Indian-law advice and Indian court appearances are reserved for advocates enrolled in India. We act as your Indian-law counsel and work alongside your firm, so you keep the client relationship and we carry the India piece.

Do you act as co-counsel for foreign law firms?+

Yes. We regularly take the Indian-law layer on cross-border matters — diligence, Indian-law-governed contracts, regulatory clearances, enforcement and India-seated arbitration — invoiced to your firm and delivered to your deadlines.

How do your fees compare to US or UK rates, and how do you bill?+

Indian counsel is materially less expensive than equivalent US or UK work. We scope and quote upfront in USD (or your preferred currency), so you approve the fee before work starts — no hourly open-ended billing.

How do you manage the time difference?+

It works in your favour. Because Mumbai is several hours ahead, we turn work around overnight — send at your end of day and it's typically waiting at your start of day. We acknowledge new matters within one working day.

How do you protect confidentiality and our data?+

We engage under NDA, handle documents through secure channels, and keep data practices aligned with India's DPDP framework.

Subsidiary, branch office or liaison office — which do we need to enter India?+

A wholly-owned subsidiary is the most flexible and can trade and hire freely (100% FDI in most sectors). A branch office is an extension of the foreign parent for a limited set of activities and needs RBI approval. A liaison (representative) office can't earn commercial income and is for market study/coordination only, also RBI-approved. We recommend the structure that fits what you actually plan to do in India — and tell you plainly when the simplest option is enough.
